Zodiac birthstones are gemstones matched to the 12 astrological signs instead of the 12 calendar months. The most common modern approach gives each sign the birthstone of the month that holds most of its dates: diamond for Aries, emerald for Taurus, pearl for Gemini, ruby for Cancer, and so on through amethyst for Aquarius and aquamarine for Pisces.
No official body sets zodiac stones, so lists differ. This guide shows the modern sign stones next to a historic 1913 list, explains why they disagree, and links to the birthstone chart by month if you prefer your month stone.
What Are Zodiac Birthstones?
Zodiac birthstones, also called zodiac stones or astral stones, are gems believed in astrological tradition to share a special link with one sign. The idea is far older than the modern month list, but it was never standardized the way month stones were.
The first century historian Josephus connected the 12 stones of Aaron's breastplate, described in the Book of Exodus, with the 12 months of the year and the 12 zodiac signs. St. Jerome later encouraged Christians to use those stones in the 5th century, and the US month list followed much later, in 1912 (International Gem Society).
Read the full timeline in the International Gem Society history of birthstones. In 1912 the National Association of Jewelers standardized the American month list, and the Jewelry Industry Council of America added stones in 1952. Zodiac stones never received a matching standard, which is why one sign can have three or four stones depending on the source.
Astrology itself is a cultural tradition, not a science. Britannica's overview of astrology covers its long history; treat any stone's "power" as symbolism you enjoy, not a promise.
Zodiac Birthstone Chart for All 12 Signs
The zodiac birthstone chart below lists each sign's dates, its modern birthstone by majority month, the month stones its dates touch, and the zodiacal gem printed in 1913. Find your sun sign in the left column.
| Sign (dates) | Modern zodiac birthstone | Month stones its dates cover | 1913 zodiacal gem (Kunz) |
|---|---|---|---|

| Taurus (Apr 20 to May 20) | Emerald | Diamond, emerald | Sapphire |
| Gemini (May 21 to Jun 20) | Pearl | Emerald, pearl, moonstone, alexandrite | Agate |
| Cancer (Jun 21 to Jul 22) | Ruby | Pearl, moonstone, alexandrite, ruby | Emerald |
| Leo (Jul 23 to Aug 22) | Peridot | Ruby, peridot, spinel, sardonyx | Onyx |
| Virgo (Aug 23 to Sep 22) | Sapphire | Peridot, spinel, sardonyx, sapphire | Carnelian |
| Libra (Sep 23 to Oct 22) | Opal | Sapphire, opal, tourmaline | Chrysolite |

Sun sign dates can shift by a day depending on the year. Libra's 1913 gem, chrysolite, is an old trade name most often used for peridot. Scorpio and Sagittarius can also choose citrine or tanzanite, since those share their months on the modern list.
The Majority Month Rule: Why Each Sign Gets Its Stone
Each zodiac sign starts around the 20th of one month and ends around the 20th of the next, so it spends roughly a third of its span in the first month and two thirds in the second. The modern zodiac birthstone is simply the stone of that second, majority month.
Aries runs from March 21 to April 19, which places 11 of its days in March and 19 in April. Under the majority month rule, Aries takes April's diamond as its zodiac birthstone, and the same count gives Taurus May's emerald, Cancer July's ruby and Aquarius February's amethyst (EVRY Jewels analysis of US birthstone and sun sign dates, 2026).
The 1913 zodiacal list works differently. In The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, American gemologist George Frederick Kunz printed a separate set of "zodiacal gems" with short verses, such as bloodstone for Aries and the topaz for Sagittarius. Kunz also recorded an old Spanish list with different stones again, proof that zodiac stones have always varied.
Many astrology sites add a third system based on each sign's ruling planet or element. Those lists change from writer to writer, so the two documented systems above are the most useful starting points.
Zodiac Stones by Element
Grouping zodiac stones by element shows a loose color story that many people enjoy. Fire signs land on bright, warm stones; water signs lean toward deep reds and sea blues; earth and air signs mix the rest.
| Element | Signs | Modern zodiac birthstones | Color story |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Diamond, peridot, turquoise | Bright white, lime green, sky blue |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Emerald, sapphire, garnet | Deep green, blue, red |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Pearl, opal, amethyst | Soft white, play of color, violet |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Ruby, topaz, aquamarine | Red, golden or blue, sea blue |
Elements also drive matchmaking in astrology. Our guide to zodiac sign compatibility explains which elements pair best, handy if you are choosing two stones for a couple or best friends.
Which Zodiac Stones Suit Everyday Wear?
Hardness decides how well a zodiac stone handles daily wear. Stones at 7 or above on the Mohs scale resist scratches from everyday dust, which contains quartz; softer stones are better in pendants and earrings than in rings.
Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale, ruby and sapphire rank 9, and topaz ranks 8, while pearl ranks only 2.5 to 4.5 and opal 5.5 to 6.5. That spread means a Gemini pearl or a Libra opal needs gentler wear than an Aries diamond or a Virgo sapphire, especially in rings (GIA gem care guidance).
| Stone | Signs (modern or 1913) | Mohs hardness | Best everyday use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Aries | 10 | Any piece, including rings |
| Ruby, sapphire | Cancer, Virgo, Taurus, Capricorn | 9 | Any piece, including rings |
| Topaz | Scorpio, Sagittarius | 8 | Rings with care, any pendant |
| Emerald, aquamarine, beryl | Taurus, Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio | 7.5 to 8 | Pendants and earrings; rings with care |
| Amethyst, agate, onyx, carnelian, bloodstone | Aquarius, Pisces, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Aries | About 7 | Everyday pendants and bracelets |
| Garnet, peridot | Capricorn, Aquarius, Leo, Libra | 6.5 to 7.5 | Pendants and earrings |
| Opal, turquoise | Libra, Sagittarius | 5 to 6.5 | Pendants and earrings |
| Pearl | Gemini | 2.5 to 4.5 | Necklaces and earrings, last on, first off |

Zodiac Birthstone or Month Birthstone: Which Should You Choose?
Choose your month birthstone if you want the widely recognized standard, and your zodiac birthstone if astrology feels more personal. Neither is more correct, and many people wear both.
- Born on the cusp? Your sign and month may point to different stones. A Capricorn born in December can wear December's turquoise or Capricorn's garnet, the January stone.
- Want a softer color? A Scorpio can trade topaz for citrine, both covered in the November birthstone guide.
- Gifting without a birth date? Pick the sign's stone from the chart and pair it with a sign pendant.
How to Wear Your Zodiac Birthstone
The easiest way to wear a zodiac birthstone is a small pendant layered with a sign charm. Start with birthstone styles such as the Faye Birthstone Necklace, Noa Birthstone Necklace, Kali Birthstone Necklace and Celeste Birthstone Necklace, and check each product page for the stone options offered.
Then add the sign itself. The Star Signs Necklace puts a glyph at the collarbone, and the Zodiac Bling Bag Charm carries it on your bag. For a celestial finish, try Constellation Earrings. For more color, browse gemstone rings and gemstone necklaces, or shop by occasion in the birthday collection.
Frequently Asked Questions About Zodiac Birthstones
What are the 12 zodiac stones?
Using the modern majority month rule, the 12 zodiac stones are diamond (Aries), emerald (Taurus), pearl (Gemini), ruby (Cancer), peridot (Leo), sapphire (Virgo), opal (Libra), topaz (Scorpio), turquoise (Sagittarius), garnet (Capricorn), amethyst (Aquarius) and aquamarine (Pisces). A 1913 list by gemologist George Frederick Kunz gives a different set, starting with bloodstone for Aries. No official body sets zodiac stones, so either list is valid.
What are the original 12 birthstones?
The original 12 stones were set in Aaron's breastplate in the Book of Exodus, and the first century historian Josephus linked them to the months and zodiac signs. Translations of the stone names vary, which is why scholars still debate them. The modern US month list came much later, in 1912, from the National Association of Jewelers. Today's zodiac lists borrow from both traditions.
What is the birthstone for Taurus?
The modern Taurus zodiac birthstone is emerald, because 20 of the sign's 31 days (April 20 to May 20) fall in May. Taurus born in late April can also claim April's diamond. The 1913 Kunz list names sapphire for Taurus instead. Emerald ranks 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale but often has inclusions, so it suits pendants and earrings better than hard wearing rings.
What is the birthstone for Cancer?
The modern Cancer zodiac birthstone is ruby, since 22 of the sign's 32 days (June 21 to July 22) fall in July. Cancers born in June can wear pearl, moonstone or alexandrite, the June month stones. The 1913 Kunz list gives emerald to Cancer. Ruby ranks 9 on the Mohs scale, so it is one of the most durable zodiac stones for daily wear.
Is my zodiac birthstone the same as my birthstone?
Sometimes, but not always. Your month birthstone follows the calendar, while your zodiac birthstone follows your sun sign, and every sign spans two months. About two thirds of each sign's dates fall in its second month, so people born in the last 10 or so days of a month often have different month and zodiac stones. Many choose to wear both together in a layered look.
